Critical Rationalism & Tradition

Articulate Hume's Problem of Induction and its challenge to traditional empiricism.

Deconstruct the core tenets of Logical Positivism, including the verification principle.

Explain Popper's critique of verificationism and his solution of falsifiability as a demarcation criterion for science.

Distinguish between the 'context of discovery' and the 'context of justification' in scientific methodology.

Define 'Critical Rationalism' as an attitude of subjecting all claims to rigorous criticism rather than seeking justification.

Formulate Popper's evolutionary epistemology schema: P1 -> TT -> EE -> P2 (Problem -> Tentative Theory -> Error Elimination -> New Problem).

Relate the P1 -> TT -> EE -> P2 schema to the process of model development in econometrics and statistics.

Define 'historicism' as critiqued by Popper and connect it to teleological theories like Marx's historical materialism.

Contrast Popper's 'piecemeal social engineering' with 'utopian social engineering,' framing policy as a testable hypothesis.

Connect Oakeshott's critique of 'Rationalism in Politics' to Popper's rejection of 'utopian social engineering'.

Synthesize Hayek's 'knowledge problem' with Popper's critique of utopianism to argue against the epistemological basis of central planning.

Interpret tradition, within a Popper-Hayek-Oakeshott framework, as a repository of tacit solutions that have survived past error elimination.

Analyze evolved institutions (e.g., common law, markets) as mechanisms for preserving and utilizing dispersed, practical knowledge.

Explain Popper's 'Myth of the Framework' as an argument for the possibility of rational criticism between competing traditions.

Explain David Deutsch's shift from Popper's 'falsifiability' to the search for 'good explanations' as the core of scientific progress.

Define Deutsch's criteria for a 'good explanation' as one that is 'hard to vary' and possesses 'reach'.

Using Deutsch's framework, diagnose Positivism as a 'bad explanation' of science because it is 'easy to vary'.

Trace the philosophical pathway from the failure of justificationism (e.g., Positivism) to the 'despair' of relativism.

Formulate the Popperian/Deutschian alternative to relativism: Knowledge as a web of problem-solving, explanatory conjectures that have survived severe criticism.

Articulate Deutsch's 'Principle of Optimism': All evils are caused by a lack of knowledge, and there are no inherent limits to its growth.

Articulate the core tenets of 'Critical-Traditionalist Rationalism,' reconciling the value of evolved traditions with the imperative for rational criticism.

Define the role of critical reason within this framework, using 'falsification' and 'good explanations' as tools for improving the conjectures embodied in tradition.

Apply the concept of 'good explanations' to political philosophy by evaluating an ideology (e.g., classical liberalism) based on its explanatory power.

Critique the idea of 'founding' a political system on abstract principles versus 'growing' a system through piecemeal, critical reform.

Develop a response to the charge that this framework is inherently 'conservative,' by arguing it is fundamentally about the process of 'problem-correction'.

Select a contemporary policy problem and identify the prevailing 'utopian' or 'rationalist' (in the Oakeshottian sense) approaches to solving it.

Critique the selected 'utopian' approaches by applying Hayek's knowledge problem and Deutsch's criteria for 'good explanations'.

Formulate a 'piecemeal' policy intervention for the chosen problem, framing it as a testable conjecture that respects tacit, evolved knowledge.

Design a critical evaluation mechanism for the proposed intervention, specifying the metrics and observations that would constitute 'error elimination' (falsification).
