Welcome back. In our previous lesson, we successfully constructed the Salaire Brut Global (Gross Salary) by assembling an employee's base salary, overtime, and bonuses. This gross salary is the starting point for all subsequent payroll calculations.
Today, we take the next critical step: calculating the first set of deductions. Our objective is to calculate the employee's share of mandatory social contributions (CNSS and AMO). These contributions are withheld from the gross salary and paid to social security organizations on the employee's behalf. Mastering this will bring us one step closer to determining the final net pay.
1. The Foundation: Social Contributions in Morocco
In Morocco, both the employee and the employer contribute to a social security system designed to provide a safety net for workers. These mandatory payments are called cotisations sociales or charges sociales. For a salaried employee, the two primary contributions are made to:
- CNSS (Caisse Nationale de Sécurité Sociale): This fund covers pensions (
pensions de vieillesse), short-term benefits like daily allowances for sickness or maternity (indemnités journalières), and family allowances. - AMO (Assurance Maladie Obligatoire): This is the mandatory health insurance scheme that covers a portion of medical expenses.
To calculate these contributions accurately, you must understand two key terms:
Assiette de cotisation(Contribution Base): This is the amount of salary on which the contribution percentage is applied. For our purposes, this is theSalaire Brut Global(SBG) that we calculated in the previous lesson.Plafond(Ceiling): This is a maximum limit on the contribution base. If an employee's gross salary exceeds this ceiling, the contribution is calculated based on the ceiling amount, not the full salary. This is a crucial rule in Moroccan payroll.
2. Calculating the CNSS Employee Contribution
The employee contributes to the CNSS to fund their future pension and short-term benefits. Let's look at the specific rates and rules.
Charges Sociales Maroc 2025 : Guide CNSS, CIMR, AMO
This guide provides the most current rates and ceilings for social contributions in Morocco. It is essential to always use up-to-date figures, as these are subject to change by law.
Please read the section 'Cotisations CNSS 2025'. Focus on the table 'Répartition Cotisations CNSS' to find the total rate for the employee ('Salarié') and the section 'Plafonds CNSS 2025' to identify the monthly ceiling.
Based on the resource, we can establish the following rules for the employee's CNSS contribution:
- Contribution Base (
Assiette):Salaire Brut Global(SBG). - Employee Rate (
Taux Salarial): 4.29%.- This is composed of 3.96% for pensions and 0.33% for daily indemnities.
- Monthly Ceiling (
Plafond): 8,000 MAD.
The calculation logic is therefore:Contribution CNSS = MIN(Salaire Brut Global, 8,000 MAD) × 4.29%
The MIN() function means you take the lower value between the gross salary and the ceiling.
Example 1: Salary below the ceiling
- Employee's SBG = 5,500 MAD
- The contribution base is 5,500 MAD (since it's less than 8,000).
Contribution CNSS= 5,500 × 4.29% = 235.95 MAD
Example 2: Salary above the ceiling
- Employee's SBG = 12,000 MAD
- The contribution base is capped at 8,000 MAD.
Contribution CNSS= 8,000 × 4.29% = 343.20 MAD
3. Calculating the AMO Employee Contribution
Next is the mandatory health insurance contribution. The calculation follows a similar logic.
Charges Sociales Maroc 2025 : Guide CNSS, CIMR, AMO
Now, let's find the rate and ceiling for the health insurance portion. We'll continue with the same up-to-date guide.
Read the subsection 'Assurance Maladie Obligatoire (AMO)' for the private sector ('Secteur Privé'). Note the employee ('Salarié') rate and the applicable monthly ceiling.
The rules for the employee's AMO contribution are:
- Contribution Base (
Assiette):Salaire Brut Global(SBG). - Employee Rate (
Taux Salarial): 2.26%. - Monthly Ceiling (
Plafond): 8,000 MAD.
Notice that the ceiling for AMO is now aligned with the CNSS ceiling, which simplifies the process.
The calculation logic is:Contribution AMO = MIN(Salaire Brut Global, 8,000 MAD) × 2.26%
Example 1: Salary below the ceiling
- Employee's SBG = 5,500 MAD
- The contribution base is 5,500 MAD.
Contribution AMO= 5,500 × 2.26% = 124.30 MAD
Example 2: Salary above the ceiling
- Employee's SBG = 12,000 MAD
- The contribution base is capped at 8,000 MAD.
Contribution AMO= 8,000 × 2.26% = 180.80 MAD
4. Comprehensive Example: From Gross Salary to Social Deductions
Let's revisit our employee, Karim, from the previous lesson. We calculated his Salaire Brut Global (SBG) to be 11,420 DH.
Now, we will calculate his total mandatory social contributions for the month.
-
Calculate CNSS Contribution:
- Karim's SBG (11,420 DH) is greater than the ceiling (8,000 DH).
- We use the ceiling as the base.
Contribution CNSS= 8,000 DH × 4.29% = 343.20 DH
-
Calculate AMO Contribution:
- His SBG is also greater than the AMO ceiling.
Contribution AMO= 8,000 DH × 2.26% = 180.80 DH
-
Calculate Total Employee Social Contributions:
Total Cotisations Salariales=Contribution CNSS+Contribution AMO- Total = 343.20 DH + 180.80 DH = 524.00 DH
This amount, 524.00 DH, is the total that will be deducted from Karim's gross salary for social security.
The image below shows the structure of a real Moroccan payslip (bulletin de paie). You can see the section for "Retenues" (Deductions) where the CNSS and AMO amounts are listed and subtracted from the gross salary.

This example highlights the importance of always verifying the current legal rates and ceilings.
Test your understanding!
An employee named Fatima has a Salaire Brut Global of 7,800 DH for the month.
Calculate her total mandatory social contributions (CNSS + AMO).
Show answer
Fatima's salary (7,800 DH) is below the monthly ceiling of 8,000 DH. Therefore, we use her full gross salary as the contribution base.
- CNSS Contribution: 7,800 DH × 4.29% = 334.62 DH
- AMO Contribution: 7,800 DH × 2.26% = 176.28 DH
- Total Social Contributions: 334.62 DH + 176.28 DH = 510.90 DH
Conclusion
In this lesson, you have learned how to calculate the essential deductions for an employee's social security contributions. This is a non-negotiable part of payroll processing in any Moroccan company.
Key Takeaways:
- Employees in Morocco contribute to two main social schemes: CNSS (pension & benefits) and AMO (health insurance).
- The current employee contribution rates are 4.29% for CNSS and 2.26% for AMO.
- The calculation is applied to the
Salaire Brut Global, but is capped at a monthly ceiling of 8,000 MAD for both CNSS and AMO. - The universal formula is:
Contribution = MIN(Salaire Brut Global, Ceiling) × Rate.
Preview of the Next Lesson:
The employee is not the only one who contributes. The employer pays a separate, and significantly larger, share to these same funds. In our next lesson, we will complete the picture by learning to calculate the employer's share of mandatory social contributions (CNSS and AMO). This will be crucial for understanding the full cost of an employee to a company.
