Hello! Welcome back to our series on Advanced Mixing Techniques.
In our last lesson, we introduced the theory behind harmonic mixing and the Camelot Wheel. You learned how to interpret the alphanumeric key system (e.g., 8A, 9A, 8B) to identify musically compatible tracks.
Today, we're moving from theory to practice. This lesson is all about applying that knowledge within your DJ workflow. You will learn how to configure Pioneer's Rekordbox software to analyze and display track keys, use its features to organize your music and find compatible tracks on the fly, and then perform a harmonically correct mix. This is a fundamental skill for creating professional-sounding sets where tracks blend together seamlessly.
Let's get your software and library set up for harmonic mixing.
1. Configuring Rekordbox for Key Analysis
Before you can mix in key, you need to ensure your entire music library is properly analyzed and displayed. Rekordbox can do this for you, but it requires a one-time setup to use the industry-standard Camelot system.
The following video provides a clear, step-by-step guide to configuring these settings.
Unlock the KEY to Mixing: Rekordbox's Secret Trick
This video from Chris M will walk you through the essential settings in Rekordbox to enable key analysis and display it in the user-friendly Camelot format.
Please watch from 00:30 to 01:21. Follow the instructions to adjust your Rekordbox preferences.
To summarize the key steps shown in the video:
- Enable Key Analysis: Go to
Preferences(the gear icon) >Analysistab. Make sure the box next toKeyis checked. This tells Rekordbox to detect the key of any new tracks you import or analyze. - Set Display Format: Go to
Preferences>Viewtab. Scroll down toKey Display Formatand selectAlphanumeric. This changes the display from classical notation (e.g., C Minor) to Camelot notation (e.g., 8A). - Show the Key Column: In your main library view, right-click on any of the column headers (like 'Title', 'Artist', 'BPM'). In the context menu that appears, make sure
Keyis checked. You can then drag and drop the 'Key' column to a position where it's easily visible.
If you have tracks in your library that were analyzed before you enabled key analysis, they won't have key data. Simply select these tracks, right-click, and choose Analyze Track(s). Ensure Key is checked in the pop-up window and click OK.
2. Finding Harmonically Compatible Tracks
With your library set up, Rekordbox gives you powerful tools to find the right track for a harmonic mix.
Method 1: Sorting Your Playlist
The simplest method is to sort your playlist by key. Just click the header of the "Key" column. This will group all your tracks by their Camelot code (1A, 1B, 2A, etc.). When you're planning a set or just exploring your music, this gives you an immediate overview of which tracks are in the same or adjacent keys.
Method 2: The "Traffic Light" Feature
For mixing live, Rekordbox has a dynamic feature often called the "Traffic Light" system. It automatically highlights compatible tracks in your playlist based on what's currently playing on the master deck. This is incredibly useful for making quick decisions during a set.
Let's see how to activate and use it.
Unlock the KEY to Mixing: Rekordbox's Secret Trick
Continuing with the same video, this next section demonstrates how to enable and use the 'Traffic Light' feature.
Watch from 01:21 to 02:39. The video explains how to set the 'Traffic Light' preference and then how to activate it in the main library view.
As the video shows, once you've enabled the "Traffic Light" in your View preferences and activated the MASTER button above your playlist, Rekordbox will highlight compatible tracks in green. This instantly narrows down your choices to tracks that will mix harmonically, letting you focus on energy and phrasing.
This same information is also available on the CDJ-3000s themselves. As the article "Mixing In Key for DJs" from Crossfader explains, when your CDJs are linked, any track in your playlist that is harmonically compatible with the master deck will show a small green key icon next to it. This is the hardware equivalent of the "Traffic Light" feature in the software.
3. The Most Important Button: Master Tempo (Key Lock)
There is one final, crucial step before you perform a harmonic mix. When you use the pitch fader to beatmatch, you are changing the speed of the track. By default, this also changes its pitch, and therefore its musical key. A track sped up by 2% will be slightly sharp, potentially clashing with the track you so carefully selected.
To prevent this, you must use Master Tempo.
The Ultimate Guide To Keymixing For DJs
This section from 'The Ultimate Guide To Keymixing For DJs' explains the function and importance of Master Tempo (also called Key Lock).
Read the section titled '2. “Lock” the key of your tracks'. Focus on understanding why changing the tempo affects the key and how Master Tempo solves this problem.
Master Tempo is Pioneer DJ's name for a feature commonly known as "key lock." It's a digital signal processing algorithm that decouples a track's tempo from its pitch. When activated, you can move the pitch fader to speed up or slow down a track, and the software will intelligently preserve its original key.
On the CDJ-3000, the Master Tempo button is located just above the pitch fader. For harmonic mixing to work, you must ensure this button is illuminated on any deck whose tempo you are adjusting.
4. Practice Exercise: Your First Harmonic Mix
Now, let's put all the pieces together.
- Prepare a Playlist: In Rekordbox, create a new playlist and add 5-10 of your favorite DnB tracks. Make sure they are all analyzed with Alphanumeric key data.
- Export to USB: Export this playlist to your USB drive.
- Load Track 1: On your CDJ setup, load a track from your new playlist onto Deck 1.
- Activate Master Tempo: Press the MASTER TEMPO button on Deck 1.
- Start Playback: Begin playing the track.
- Find a Compatible Track: Look at the playlist on the CDJ screen. You should see the small green key icon next to several tracks. These are your harmonic matches.
- Load Track 2: Choose one of these highlighted tracks and load it onto Deck 2.
- Activate Master Tempo: Immediately press the MASTER TEMPO button on Deck 2.
- Beatmatch and Mix: Cue up Track 2 and perform a beatmatch using the pitch fader and jog wheel, just as you've practiced. Because Master Tempo is active on both decks, their keys will remain locked and compatible even as you adjust their tempos.
- Listen: Perform a long, smooth transition. Try blending over a section where both tracks have melodic or bassline elements playing. Notice how the different musical parts work together without clashing. They should sound like they belong in the same song.
Repeat this process, mixing from your second track into a third compatible one. Get a feel for how the key relationships guide your track selection and influence the energy of the mix.
Conclusion
Excellent work. You've now bridged the gap between the theory of harmonic mixing and its practical application. This skill is a hallmark of an advanced DJ and will make your mixes sound significantly more polished and intentional.
Key Takeaways:
- Configure Rekordbox to analyze for
Keyand display it inAlphanumericformat for Camelot notation. - Use the "Key" column to sort playlists for planning, and the "Traffic Light" (green key icon) feature for live mixing.
- Always engage Master Tempo (Key Lock) on your CDJs when beatmatching to preserve the track's original key.
- Harmonic mixing allows for longer, smoother blends where melodic elements can overlap musically.
Preview of the Next Lesson:
So, what happens if the perfect track for the moment isn't a harmonic match? In our next lesson, we'll explore the Key Sync and Key Shift features on the CDJ-3000. These tools allow you to change a track's key on the fly to force a harmonic match, opening up even more creative possibilities.
