Neoliberalism

Apply Michel Foucault’s concept of governmentality to explain Brown’s claim that people are recast as human capital and market rationality spreads beyond the economy.

Reconstruct Brown’s argument that neoliberal attacks on “the social” and social justice weaken equality, democratic citizenship, and popular sovereignty.

Explain Brown’s claim that neoliberal freedom and traditional morality, intensified by nihilism and ressentiment, can produce anti-democratic nationalist politics.

Compare how Thatcherism, New Labour’s Third Way, and post-2010 austerity used markets and state power, citing policy examples to identify continuity and change.

Defend a judgement about how well Brown’s account explains British politics, including Brexit-era nationalist conservatism, by weighing it against a class-project or political-economy interpretation of neoliberalism.
